Resorts and spas from Romania at your service for your good health

  • In the middle of Romania, Transylvania boasts high-roofed wooden churches, exceptional architecture and folk art, medieval towns, mysterious castles and a colourful history.
  • Be seduced by the beauty of forested peaks, lush and undulating valleys, and sparkling streams.
  • Enjoy the soothing water of Lake Bear – which was formed when a salt mine collapsed. The helio-thermal lake contains sapropelic mud and extremely salty water that has a therapeutic effect on gynaecological disorders.
  • The high concentration of salt means you can easily float on the surface of the water.
  • Enjoy spending time in Parajd, close to Sovata. Parajd has a salt mine with an underground children’s playground and ecumenical chapel. The atmosphere helps to alleviate respiratory conditions.
The spa resort of Sovata lies nestled in a hidden valley in the Carpathian Mountains. This is probably one of the most natural, un-spoilt regions left in Europe. The spa is situated right next to Lake Bear, the only 'helio-thermal' lake on the continent. At the turn of the last century, picturesque wooden villas sprang up around the lake; they are still intact today, and give the town a unique atmosphere.
Because of its high salt content (which means bathers can float effortlessly on the surface), it is often referred to as the 'Dead Sea' of Transylvania. In summer, the surface temperature is between 20-25ºC, while at a depth of 2 metres it rises to 35–40ºC; it is a wonderful experience to lie back on the lake and unwind among its beautiful surroundings. This remarkable lake with its curative salt water has attracted visitors for decades.

Sovata is the perfect base from which to see some of the best sights in Romania: Gyilkos tó (Killer Lake), Békás Szoros (Frog’s Gorge), the fairytale town of Sighișoara and Dracula’s Castle, all set in the magical Carpathian Mountains. And after a long day’s sightseeing, you can return for a heavenly soak in the saltwater lake.
NATURAL RESOURCES AND SIGNATURE TREATMENTS

Salt
The salty Lake Bear of Sovata is the only ‘helio-thermal’ lake, and its natural salt water is used as a basis for the treatments. Because of the high salt content – which makes bathers float on the surface – it is known as the ‘Dead Sea of Translyvania’.  In summer, the temperature rises to 35ºC, providing the perfect conditions for a relaxing float on the water. The salt water has a curative effect on mobility disorders and certain skin conditions, and is used for inhalation treatments. Because of its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, the mud from the lake is used for both musculoskeletal and gynaecological sterility treatments in the form of mud packs.

Signature treatment – Natural Salt Bath
Duration of treatment: 20 minutes
What to expect: A relaxing individual bath, with a ‘floating sensation’ at a temperature of 32–36ºC.
Effects: The treatment is prescribed for chronic rheumatic diseases and skin complaints, in addition to being an effective relaxation treatment.

Signature treatment – Natural Salt Inhalation
Duration of treatment: 10–20 minutes
What to expect: Relaxing in a salt chamber whilst inhaling the healing, cleansing particles of natural salt.
Effects: The anti-bacterial salt particles help dissolve mucus and clean out the respiratory system. It treats chronic respiratory conditions, allergies or the after effects of a respiratory infection or cold.

Oradea, eight miles east of the Hungarian border, is one of the most picturesque towns in western Romania, as well as an important cultural center with a state theater, puppet theater, philharmonic orchestra, libraries, and museums. At the turn of the last century, most of the town's old houses were rebuilt and customized in the then-trendy architectural style from Vienna called "Secession," featuring richly decorated facades of pale pink, blue, green and white.
There are around 100 religious sites of different denominations in Oradea, including three synagogues, the biggest Baptist church in Eastern Europe and Biserica cu Luna, a church with an astronomical clock depicting the phases of the moon. Other sites worth visiting are the Cris Ethnographic Museum, a museum housed in a large baroque palace with 365 windows, and Cetatea Oradea, a pentagonal fortress.

The exciting architecture of the buildings in the city's square reflects the influence of the one-time Austrian-Hungarian occupation; most notable are the City Hall and Cenad Palace. Other sites of note include a fortress originally built by the Turks in 1550 (and rebuilt twice in the 17th and 18th centuries), the Palace of Culture and State Philharmonic House.

With its cool climate and slopes that stretch from the Tarnava Mare (Large Tarnava) to the Tarnava Mica (Small Tarnava) rivers, the region is ideal for fruity white grapes with a very good acidity. The area has a long tradition of producing excellent dry and medium-dry wines such as Feteasca Alba, Feteasca Regala, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat Ottonel, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Traminer.
Although wooden tools have been replaced by modern winepresses and state of the art technology, grape picking, the control of fermentation, clarity, stability, the storage and maturation of wine are all carried out according to a special set of rules handed down from generation to generation. There are also traditions of wine making in some of the Saxon villages in this region, with small vineyards producing must (new wine) for the larger wineries.

Medieval town of Sighisoara (UNESCO World Heritage Site)

Where: 30 miles east of Bazna
Access: car, bus, train (from Medias)
Transylvania is also home to the exquisite medieval town of Sighisoara (find out more about Sighisoara), a perfectly intact 15th century gem with nine towers, narrow passageways and cobbled streets, burgher houses and ornate churches. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sighisoara is also the birthplace of Vlad Dracula, nicknamed Vlad the Impaler (Vlad Tepes), ruler of Walachia from 1456 to 1462. It was Vlad who inspired Bram Stoker's fictional creation, Count Dracula. His house is just one of many attractions here. Others include: the Church on the Hill, with its 500-year-old frescoes; the Church of the Dominican Monastery, known for its Transylvanian Renaissance carved altarpiece, baroque painted pulpit, Oriental carpets and 17th century organ; and the Venetian House, built in the 13th century. In the nearby countryside, another UNESCO World Heritage town, 13th century Biertan, stands high on a hill as one of the largest and most impressive medieval strongholds in Transylvania.

The Fortified Church at Saschiz (UNESCO World Heritage Site)

Where: 40 miles east of Bazna
Access: car
Saschiz is renowned not only as home to one of Transylvania's finest fortified churches but also as a carpentry and wood-painting center. It was here that Saschiz blue pottery was born in 1702.
The Evangelical Church of Saschiz was built between 1493 and 1496 by Saxon colonists. The monument is very impressive due to its sheer size and the way the fortifying elements have been adapted to the shape of a church building. From the outside, the church appears to be a bulwark, but its defensive role is surpassed by the beauty of its gothic elements: huge arches, massive buttresses and decorative stone and brick aspects. Due to the significant distance between the center of the village and the hill on which a Saxon fortress was built in 1496, the fortified Evangelical church became the main refuge for the inhabitants of Saschiz during invading raids.

Bath of strength – the Roman bath

The Roman Bath is a wonderful bathing resort which sometimes is mentioned as bath of Hercules or the bath of strength. The resort was constructed and developed in 1838 on a previously existent wooden construction from 1792. The first establishment had 16 cabins and 4 basins made out of red marble. The water was cooled down and accumulated in two basins and the waiting room had a fountain for internal cures.
When building the new resort the builders kept 4 cabins and the 2 basins of the former construction. From the basin in the south you can admire a statue of Hercules sculpted in a cliff which is a legacy left here by the Romans. During the restoration in 1724-37 several signs were found which denote the fact that the spring was used by the Romans. Together with the Roman bath another fountain was constructed called the Spring of Healing. Today this spring gives place to the springs of Hygeea and II Hercules.

MONEASA  BATHS AND SPA
Moneasa town, from Arad county, is located at the foot of Codru-Moma Mountains, at 128m altitude and 102 km away from Arad city. Crossed by the upper stream of the Moneasa river, hidden deep in the forest, along the main valley, surrounded by mountain cliffs covered by a rich and diverse forest vegetation, Moneasa finds itself in a rare beauty scenery.
The first recognition of the Moneasa commune dates back in the 24th of April 1597, when it was a part of the Dezna domains. Dezna had already been a fortress back in 1318, having been the property of the Losonczy family and of the Turks. It was then that the Turks built a couple of baths in Moneasa, due to the thermal springs in the area.In 1565, the Sultan Suleiman donates the Dezna fortress and domains to the Prince Ioan Sigismund who, in turn, donates them to Bebek Gheorghe. In 1593 the war against the Turks starts. Prince Sigismund Bathory donates to Kornis Gaspar de Goncz-Rusca  the Dezna fortress and domains, together with the thermal springs and iron deposits from Moneasa. In 1633, the fortress and domain are successively taken by Bethlen Gavril, Keresztesy Paul and, on the 1st of November 1633, prince Rakoczy Gheorghe the 1st donates the fortress and Kornis Sigismund‘s domain.
Dezna fortress and domain are conquered on the 15th of October 1658 by the Vizir of Buda’s Turks, who destroy the fortress. In the first years of the 18th century, duke Mutina finds interest in the iron deposits on his domain and he builds primitive melting houses and mill machines for pounding the ore. In 1804, Iosif, baron Nevery Alexa de Gyula Varsand’s brother, inherits Moneasa, and continues the exploitation of iron ore and limestone. In 1847, baths for leisure and treatment are built near the thermal springs from Moneasa. In 1865, Doctor Nendtvich Carol analyzes the thermal springs from Moneasa for the first time.
On the 14th of August 1893, the narrow railway connecting Moneasa and Sebis is put to use, leading to a development of the mining industry (iron, marble, limestone) and promoting the resort’s development.
On the 13th of May 1898, Moneasa receives the recognition as a balneary resort from the Royal Hungarian Ministry of Internal Affairs.
